He gained recognition in Canada for the construction of the Rideau Canal, a waterway designed to serve as a military stronghold in case of an American attack on the British colony in the early 19th century. In honour of the Royal Engineer, a town in Canada was even named Bytown, which was later renamed Ottawa in 1855 and designated the capital of the country. As he grew up, he joined the Royal Military Academy and, by the early 19th century, had attained the rank of second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. His military career began with service in various parts of Britain, including:

Chatham;

Plymouth;

Portsmouth.

In 1802, he was first sent to Canada, where he worked on improving the navigability of the St. Lawrence River. He also participated in several other engineering projects, including the construction of fortifications in Quebec and the planning of a military road between Montreal and Kingston. However, in 1811, By had to return to England to take part in the Napoleonic Wars.

In 1812, the situation in Canada also became tense. Reports emerged that the United States was planning to invade the British colony of Upper Canada. The Americans aimed to launch an attack via the St. Lawrence River, which could have disrupted Canada’s main supply line between Montreal and the primary military base in Kingston. In response, the British began extensive construction of fortifications, including securing a waterway between Montreal and Kingston. They devised a new route along the St. Lawrence River to the mouth of the Rideau River, the site that would later become the capital of Canada.

The Construction of the Rideau Canal

The Rideau Canal was built between 1826 and 1832, primarily to provide a secure waterway between Montreal and Kingston. It entirely bypassed the St. Lawrence River, which was deemed too risky due to the potential threat of an American attack. Military engineer John By oversaw all construction work. The project was monumental, involving not just the creation of an alternative water route but also the construction of over forty locks, dams, bridges, and other critical infrastructure.

The canal’s construction plan had been devised in the early 19th century, at a time when the threat of an American invasion was at its peak. Canadian forces were swiftly mobilized to defend their territory, and By was appointed as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of this new navigable canal, which was considered crucial for the defence of the British colony.

Completed in 1832, the Rideau Canal became a vital artery for Canada. Although initially intended as an alternative military route, it quickly became the primary channel for transporting heavy cargo. Goods such as timber, minerals, and grain were transported via the new canal, which ran through Ottawa. Every year, hundreds of barges carrying various goods passed through. However, the canal’s importance declined after the construction of a new railway in Ottawa in 1854, which significantly expedited cargo transport.

Undoubtedly, the canal built by John By played a crucial role in the defence of not only Ottawa but also other Canadian cities.

The Rideau Canal was recognized as one of the most ambitious and remarkable engineering projects of its time and became a significant piece of Ottawa’s infrastructure in the 19th century. However, John By was accused of excessive government spending, which led to a political scandal. As a result, he was forced to resign.

Despite his extraordinary engineering achievements in Canada, John By never received official recognition or praise from the British government. He passed away without witnessing the full appreciation of his work, yet his legacy lives on in the form of the Rideau Canal—now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key historical landmark in Ottawa.

Colonel John By was a Royal Engineer who was sent to Canada in the early 19th century.
