It was during this time that Ottawa was declared the capital of Canada, necessitating significant changes in governance and city defense. Even before the formation of the Confederation, British Army troops were deployed to Canada, specifically trained for its defense and the maintenance of order. Many of today’s Canadian Army regiments trace their roots back to these British military units.

Soon after, Ottawa enacted an official militia law, leading to the creation of permanent military units in the city and other Canadian regions. Throughout the second half of the 19th century, the military sector in Ottawa expanded rapidly. New regiments were continuously formed, including:

Royal Field Artillery

Royal Horse Artillery

Royal Armoured Corps

Royal Infantry Regiment, among others.

Since the mid-19th century, the Canadian Army has participated in several conflicts, including:

The war against the Fenian Brotherhood, an Irish republican organization based in the United States that launched raids into Canadian territory between 1866 and 1871.

The Red River Rebellion against the Métis population (1869–1870).

The North-West Rebellion against the Métis (1885).

The Second Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902).

World War I (1914–1918).

World War II (1939–1945).

The Korean War (1950s).

The War in Afghanistan (2001–2021).

Development, Structure, and Equipment of the Canadian Army

Over the centuries, the Canadian Army has evolved into a strong and formidable force with a well-established command structure. The Army’s operations are overseen by the National Defence Headquarters, located in the capital city of Ottawa. The Canadian Army is divided into four military regions:

2nd Division, based in Quebec, responsible for the command of the Canadian Army’s land forces in the region.

3rd Division, headquartered in Western Canada, in charge of military operations and mobilization in the region.

4th Division, located in Ontario, originally an infantry division but later reorganized as an armoured division.

5th Division, based in Atlantic Canada, an armoured division overseeing operations and mobilization in the area.

In the 21st century, Canada is a highly developed nation, with Ottawa and other major cities serving as hubs for industry, scientific research, and technological innovation. As a result, the Canadian Army is equipped with cutting-edge military technology. The rapid expansion of Ottawa’s defense industry began after World War I, focusing on the production of essential military equipment, including:

Infantry vehicles

Anti-tank missiles

Small arms and other weaponry

This advancement laid the foundation for further development in Canada’s military industry. Today, all Canadian Army units are outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment, designed to counter any modern threats well into 2035. The Canadian Army currently maintains:

Over 10,000 military transport trucks

More than 2,000 armoured vehicles

Over 150 pieces of field artillery

The evolution of the Canadian Army, from its origins as a British military force to its current status as a modern, well-equipped defense force, reflects Canada’s commitment to national security and its role in global peacekeeping efforts.

The Canadian Army has a long and eventful history.
