The mid-19th century was a period of rapid development for Canadian territories. It was during this time that Ottawa was declared the capital of Canada, necessitating significant changes in governance and city defense. Even before the formation of the Confederation, British Army troops were deployed to Canada, specifically trained for its defense and the maintenance of order.
